Sicario (2015): Just keep your eyes on the time

Spain Oct 8 – Hello spanish how are you? you should be proud for coming Sicario (2015) movie in front of you because not only spanish people who can see the greatness of spain in through this film but every one in the world could enjoy from their couches. The word “sicario” is Spanish for hitman, but it sounds like a condition: “I’m not feeling well, I’m suffering from sicario.” Or maybe that’s just the sensation you get coming out of “Sicario”.
The power of “Sicario” cannot be underestimated: This film about drug cartel violence on the Mexico border is a cinematic gut punch and one of the most well-crafted films of 2015.
This dense, twisty, unsettling, nerve-racking thriller has that kind of effect. It’s about lies and truths, lies packed within truths and questions about what constitutes either, and it’s designed to keep viewers off balance and at attention in this sicario.
By the end, it packs a death stare so potent it will make you want to turn a blind eye to the shadowy brutality of its real-world horrors. Sicario (2015)

It is an assault on the senses, and yes, that happens through visceral episodes of violence. There’s no surprise there. Emily Blunt gives a career-making performance as Kate Macer, an FBI operative with a touch of Clarice Starling’s idealism but who is also gripped with the gradual and terrible realisation that just like so many US foreign escapades, the war on drugs she is fighting is unwinnable.
In this sicario film The Cartel’s tentacles are creeping into the southern states but cut one off, and three grow in their place. Kate is still young but her face is a haunted study in terror. How long can she keep this up? Her days are spent in a flak jacket and with an assault weapon; her nights alone in her stark and unwelcoming apartment.

When she is asked to join a covert taskforce determined to nail the men who are ultimately responsible for the carnage, Kate sees it as a last chance but her scepticism sets in early. This elite drug enforcement agency is never quite who or what they seem. Who they actually work for is never made clear either or, indeed, whether they have government sanction at all. What is clear is that they are committed to using extraordinary measures and sharp practices to combat the feudal drug lords of Mexico and their designs on American suburbia.

Matt doesn’t deny that he and his team stretch the law to get to their good end. They’re disruptors, he says, jarring cartels from their sense of business security. The more disruptions, the more mistakes a kingpin might make. And that’s who they’re after—Fausto, the top drug dog. If Fausto goes down, the cartel will too.
“To find him would be like discovering a vaccine,” Matt says.
The film (sicario) doesn’t remotely shy away from the human cost that this takes on the regular Mexican citizens either, as it’s clear that they have sadly grown accustomed to the everyday annoyances (at best) and outrages (at worst) that are a byproduct of the current mess. I am uncomfortable comparing this film to Zero Dark Thirty purely because it is an action-based film with a female lead, but the themes are similar, and the climactic admission of moral defeat rings true in both films.
But while Kathryn Bigelow’s (arguably superior) film kept the focus on the weight carried by the soldiers and spies who did terrible things in the pursuit of “evildoers,” Sicario is a little more balanced in showing those affected by our actions beyond merely stating that crossing the moral line sure made our heroes feel bad.

Yes, the focus is mostly on the dogged lawmen and women, but empathy is extended not just to the (metaphorical) torturers but to the (metaphorically) tortured as well. And even while not remotely condemning the “ends justifies the means” philosophy, the film makes a solid case for just that, as it’s clear that conventional law enforcement has done little to turn the tide. There is a great moment where Del Toro compares the capture or killing of a prominent cartel boss to “finding a vaccine,” and the moment sticks throughout the film. This is meaty, weighty entertainment with a lot on its mind. In fact, it almost crumbles under its own weight in the third act, as the implied message becomes painfully on-point.
Sicario debuts in limited release on September 18th before going out wide on October 2nd. It arrives in America and the UK courtesy of Lions Gate Entertainment while, as is the case for releases like this, has a rainbow of separate distributors for separate international markets. The Black Label Media/Thunder Roads Production has an estimated budget of $32 million, and Lionsgate snapped up the distribution rights before the film was even finished. It comes two years after Denis Villeneuve burst onto the mainstream scene with the Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Prisoners, which nabbed a solid $122m worldwide on a $46m budget for Warner Bros. /Time Warner Inc. His next project will be the Blade Runner sequel, so ummmm…

Anyway, the film helps kick off the unofficial “Oscar season,” which I like to call “All of you grownups can stop whining about superhero movies, young adult fantasies, and animated spectacles for a few months” season. It is actually one of two major limited debuts, dropping alongside the IMAX/PLF-only preview of Everest, which (six degrees of separation here) also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin. Mr. Brolin, of course, is one of the lead actors in Sicario. Everything’s connected in that Cloud Atlas-kinda way. The film is somewhat noteworthy in that it is a rough-and-tumble action thriller with a female lead in the form of Emily Blunt.

Nonetheless, as a whole, Sicario is a bracing and powerful indictment of an inherently immoral policy that has turned otherwise good people into villains while making genuine villains into outright monsters. It looks great, Blunt is fantastic throughout, and it will stick with you for a while even if you choose to pick apart certain narrative choices in the aftermath. It is a painfully human, but ultimately cynical, look at an outright inhuman atrocity inflicted on a people on account of arbitrary prohibition.
